Conductive heating

What is conductive heating?

With conductive heating, an electrical heating current is used to generate heat directly in the workpiece to be heated. The workpiece itself is part of the heating circuit. The conductive heating is based on P = I² * R the following physical principle:

According to Ohm’s law I = U / R flows depending on the applied voltage (U = volt)

and the electr. Resistance of the workpiece to be heated (R = Ω) an electric current (I = ampere).

The effective heating power P = U * I causes the temperature to rise in the workpiece as a function of the heating time (t), since the amount of energy Q = P * t is supplied to the workpiece over time. Conductive heating is therefore a direct heating process:

The heat is generated in the workpiece itself and is not transferred from the outside through heat conduction, convection or thermal radiation.

Conductive heating

Ultimately, the desired conductive heating determines the required power range. The focus is on the material, dimensions, target temperature and desired throughput. The term “conductive heating” includes all areas of application that fall in the temperature range below the respective good melting point.

The term “conductive heating” includes all areas of application that fall in the temperature range below the respective good melting point.

This includes the heat treatments

  • Preheating
  • Tempering
  • glow

as well as that

  • soldering
  • welding
  • sintering

and heating for subsequent hot forming and numerous special applications.

High current transformer / high current contact

The heart of every conductive heating system is the heating circuit consisting of a high-current transformer, high-current supply and the high-current contact. These components are the part of the system that provides the high current for heating or feeds it to the workpiece. The characteristics of these components depend on the workpiece to be heated..

Advantages of conductive heating are:

  • uniform heating over the workpiece diameter
  • easy automation
  • Scrap reduction
  • good, constant quality
  • immediate availability of heating
  • high flexibility when changing dimensions (diameter, length)
  • easy handling
  • very little space required
  • clean, emission-free heating
  • short cycle times
  • CO² reduction compared to fossil heating principles
  • easy handling
  • High system availability and service life
  • Proven, long-lasting system technology
